Auburn University English Department

The Auburn University English Department has four interrelated missions involving instruction, research and creative work, outreach, and service undertaken to benefit the people of the state, region, nation, and world.

In instruction the department’s mission is to offer high-quality degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels and at the same time offer sophisticated and challenging general education courses, including core curriculum courses in writing (at the freshman level) and in literature (at the sophomore level) and advanced courses in writing (at the junior level), courses that contribute significantly to Auburn graduates’ cultural knowledge as well as their ability to read well, write well, and think critically.

In research and creative work the department’s mission is to advance knowledge and achievement in the broad field of English studies, which encompasses literature (including British literature, American literature, comparative literature, and critical theory), language (including both theoretical and applied linguistics), composition studies (including rhetoric, composition, and technical and professional communication), and creative writing.
